In praise of monolingual English Dictionaries

The present article briefly reviews milestones in the development of monolingual dictionaries, pointing out the turning point brought about by the advent of corpora, and delves into certain features of contemporary dictionaries, such as dictionaries of collocations for learners which can help unlock the mysteries of English as a language.
