Abstract:
In the belief that translation is a double communication act, inserted in a particular context and dependent on the intention
of the sender and the addressee’s disposal, the essay aims to investigate the role of translation in the transmission of
culture, focusing particularly on the activity of playwrights, rhetoricians and Latin philosophers when they introduced
Greek culture in Rome.
The point of departure are the jakobsonian definitions of “communication” and “translation”, which make up the
contemporary theoretical substrate to the thoughts of the Ancient, traceable in the introductions to the works translated
or in the letters accompanying the texts, both in the terminology, very varied, they use to refer to translation.
