Monasticism made a significant contribution to Western civilisation in terms of institutional experimentation. One example is the Charta caritatis of the Abbey of Cîteaux, the first constitutional document of the Middle Ages. Mendicant orders and the earliest forms of democracy are therefore closely linked.
