The overall objective of the POMONA project is to characterise and promote the biodiversity of apple and pear trees in Valchiavenna and Val Vestino – which are at risk of genetic erosion and/or extinction – through the phenotypic, genetic, historical, organoleptic and nutritional characterisation of local varieties and accessions conserved ex situ in the collection fields at Tanno (SO) and Prabione (BS) and the production of grafted plants to be distributed to the farms participating in the partnership. In parallel, within the same areas, an in situ/on-farm survey will be carried out to identify accessions, represented by old trees previously unrecorded, that are worthy of conservation and promotion.
