The paper highlights long run political and economic trends in Latin American countries, showing an overall strong acceleration of democratization with a sluggish growth. The mix "globalization with stagnation" is tentatively explained by insitutional factors, such as high inequality and the low degree of institutional inclusiveness. inequality may also explain the prevalence of alternating populism and authoritarian regimes in Latin American countries.
