Abstract:
From an ethical point of view, family is the primary relational context,
but also the most implicit and somehow elusive. Family life, in its concrete
occurrence of shared experiences, finds in everyday life the privileged scenario of
its own moral education: however, there is not always awareness of the ethical
imprinting left by this daily life. In particular, it is important to investigate
reasons and meanings of family values transmission, with reference to the current historical moment.
From an ethical point of view, with regard to the complexity of epochal
challenges, we will propose to understand family as an “enabling” context,
in which care can also be expressed through forms of attention and responsibility in respect to others and to the world. Within this capability approach, family educational responsibility, often flattened on mere protective
functions, can play a crucial role in promoting a civic culture, making its
members aware, critical and participating citizens, capable of experimenting and pursuing the common good.
